When krill oil hit the scene, people took notice: higher absorption than fish oil, plus antioxidant astaxanthin? Sounds too good to be true! Turns out, it might be. Although they don’t get a lot of press for it, krill play a critical role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere…in fact, Antarctic krill capture about 12 billion tons of carbon each year. Experts admit that they don’t know the environmental impact of even “sustainable” krill harvesting. Here’s where iwi life comes in: our algae produces Omega-3 which is even more absorbable than what you could get from krill.¹ Plus, Vegikrill contains even more astaxanthin than the leading brand of krill oil²--all from plant-based algae, grown far from the ocean. So krill can stay where they need to be. In the ocean.

EPA is a long-chain Omega-3 fatty acid that is essential for normal heart health, joint function, and immune response. The central nervous system, brain, and retina rely heavily on DHA during growth.

An unsaturated fatty acid (specifically palmitoleic acid) that helps support heart health.

Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant in the carotenoid family. It has a deep red hue and is found naturally in certain species of algae.

An emulsifier that helps maximize the uptake of nutrients into the body.

Chlorophyll is the green compound naturally found in plants that photosynthesize. It is used as a nutritional supplement and is thought to help nourish the blood, promote gut health, and to support normal immune function. It is also a natural antioxidant which supports stability of our algae oil.

frequently asked questions
Does Vegikrill contain krill?
No. Vegikrill is a totally vegan alternative to popular krill oil supplements. Vegikrill provides the same nutrition that you want from krill oil, without damaging the planet. Vegikrill provides true Omega-3 DHA and EPA in a highly absorbable form from iwi life’s special algae blend, along with antioxidant astaxanthin, also sourced from algae. Since algae is a tiny plant and can be grown on land, away from the delicate ocean ecosystem, Vegikrill is a more sustainable choice. Krill stays in the ocean where they need to be to help capture carbon. You get all the nourishment your body needs. We call that a win/win!
Where can I learn more about how krill help capture carbon? I’ve never heard about this!
It was news to a lot of us at iwi life, too! Krill are truly an unsung hero of sustainability, which is why we need to leave them in the ocean where they need to be and focus on other (superior) options for nourishing our bodies. Here’s a link with a video that shows exactly how krill help in the fight against climate change--as long as they’re left in the ocean:
What is krill?
Krill are tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that play a massive role in keeping our climate cooler. That’s why we pledge to never harm them to make supplements! Krill oil swept the nation when it was shown that it is very well absorbed by the human body and contains good amounts of Omega-3 DHA and EPA…but guess what? Krill didn’t even make the Omega-3 to begin with. They get it from eating algae, and so can you! One more perk of krill oil is that it contains astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant. Give yourself a pat on the back if you’ve already guessed where krill get their astaxanthin…that’s right! From eating algae. So now that we know that we can deliver everything you’d want from a krill oil supplement, but leave the krill in the ocean to capture carbon, it’s really a no-brainer to choose iwi life VegiKrill!
I thought that if there was any cholesterol in something, that it meant it is not vegan. Is this really vegan?
When you’re a careful label reader, the adage that “only animal products contain cholesterol” can be helpful--but only to a point! Plants that grow on land (the ones with stems, roots, and green leaves) do not make cholesterol. That is true! Everything changes when you get to sea plants, though. Microalgae make a tiny bit of cholesterol along with their Omega-3 content. Isn’t that amazing? You can rest assured that all iwi life products are 100% vegan, and on the cholesterol front, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that in human clinical tests, iwi life’s patented Almega®PL extract has been shown to help maintain cholesterol levels already within the normal range.
I already take chlorella and spirulina. Don’t they give me the same nutrition as VegiKrill?
We love to see it--another algae super-fan! Chlorella and spirulina are wonderful sources of nutrition. However, they do not contain DHA or EPA Omega-3s, or astaxanthin, which is what makes iwi life VegiKrill so unique and valuable as a source of algae-based nutrition.
